Foot-and-mouth disease alert: Enhanced measures in Serbia following the outbreak in Hungary

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia has announced that there are currently no cases of foot-and-mouth disease in Serbia, but that enhanced preventative measures have been introduced after this dangerous infectious disease was confirmed in Hungary, in the Győr-Moson-Sopron region, near the border with Slovakia.

The disease was confirmed in Hungary on 7 March 2025 on a dairy farm, and the country's competent authorities immediately introduced control and protection measures to prevent the further spread of the infection.

Foot-and-mouth disease is one of the most dangerous infectious diseases of cloven-hoofed animals, affecting cattle, pigs, sheep and goats. It spreads rapidly and causes enormous economic losses, which is why it requires rigorous control measures.

Serbia has had no cases since 1996, but alertness has been raised

Although this disease has not been recorded in Serbia for almost three decades, the Ministry issued a special order on 21 January 2025 to prevent its introduction, which includes:

  • enhanced control of the import of animals and animal products,
  • mandatory reporting of suspected symptoms,
  • strict biosecurity measures on farms.

Appeal to livestock farmers and veterinarians

The authorities are appealing to livestock farmers to monitor their animals' health daily and, should symptoms such as sores in the mouth, on the hooves or udders, excessive salivation, and difficulty moving appear, to contact a veterinarian immediately.

Ban on the import of animal products

A special warning is issued to citizens arriving from Hungary and Germanythe importation of animal-based products, including sandwiches, is strictly prohibited. The Customs Administration and the Border Veterinary Inspection have announced intensified controls.
